cuz I got Silence...for $9 CAN the other day...
I thought it was a bit steep, since it's just the movie(although we don't care aboot the bonus crap).
that's new, btw, not used.

Average price ranges from $10-$20.

Super-duper-special-deluxe-director's cut shit's probably, like, $25.

Boxed sets are their own animal, though. I got the Indiana Jones set for less than $40, Star Wars was about $50. Sets of HBO shows like The Sopranos and Deadwood are ridiculous, $75-$80. Then there are the sets that come with all kinds of fancy bullshit like bookends, busts/statues, etc. God only knows how much that crap'll set you back.

I know that you guys don't really have 'em, but my buddy told me Target's having a crazy sale on DVDs. He got the Back to the Future trilogy for less than $25.

Peeks, as a Canadian DVD buyer this is what I generally find...

The good special edition DVDs (like LOTR) run about $35.

Basic, run of the mill (recent) movies are in the $20-$25 range.

Older (not previously viewed) movies can be found anywhere from $9.99 and up.

Box sets can be crazy-assed priced but when you break them down to a per DVD price they are still in the $20 range.

My best advice is to buy new releases... that's generally when the price is the best or check out the previously viewed movies at Rogers or Blockbuster. They're slim pickin's but you can get 2 for $15 on a good day.

Avoid Columbia House... they are total fuckers... the DVD's are cheaper than average but they rape you with bogus shipping and handling... like most eBay transactions...

Sony did not kill Beta... the American public did by buying VHS. Good technology costs more but the masses would rather have cheap crap.

Sony did not give up their technology because they already had the entire TV broadcast industry. They would still have it if it weren't for the fact that practically everything is digitally based now.

Yeah, if you got it recently, it's probably dual.

I don't know a lot about it right now, but my understanding is that your normal cheap 4 GB DVDs today can copy the actual movie from a DVD, but nothing else. To copy the entire DVD (menus, extras, etc.), you need a dual-layer 8 GB disc, which right now still run about $10-$15 bucks a piece.

That's my understanding. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Peeker, just look at the U.S. home page for Amazon.com. That should give you a pretty good idea. There prices are usually within a dollar or two plus or minus of the best prices you can find in brick and mortar stores around my area.

Generally, a brand new film, released alone, is going to be around $20.

Slightly older films around $15.

Ongoing franchise films usually stay in that 15-20 range for years, until at least the franchise is dead.

Stuff much older than just 3-4 years is $10 or under, generally speaking.

Lots of Full-Frame DVDs can currently be had for around $5 almost anywhere, due to the full-frame format not selling and being phased out by some film companies.

Much, much older movies just depend on demand and popularity. The Universal monster collections included anywhere from 4 to 6 films each and cost about $20 per set...yet Universals Conan set of 2 films only cost me $12 on sale--highest price I have seen for it was $15. MGM is selling the vincent Price/Roger Corman Poes films 2 to a disc for around $10 a pop.

Then, other older films, such as the less-popular Hammer horror flicks, can cost over $20 a piece.

Multiple-release films depend on the format. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Moulin Rouge both had massive 2-disc sets for their original release, but later releases cut the package down to single-disk movie with fewer extras. In the case of FF, I have seen used copies of the deluxe set sell for more than brand-new, sealed copies of the current version.

It just depends.

Like I said, hit Amazon and browse some of the titles you are interested in to get an idea.

Peeker, for the most part if you compare the prices on Amazon.ca and Futureshop.ca, you'll have an idea of the best price.

This is of course excluding all the 2/$20, 2/$30, etc. deals that a lot of stores have on movies.
